With an introduction to soft computing we discuss how the threemain ingredients, fuzzy logic, neural networks and genetic algorithmscan play significant roles in the design of successfully patternrecognition systems. Then we concentrate only on one aspect ofpattern recognition, feature analysis, and discuss various methodsusing fuzzy logic, neural networks and genetic algorithms for featureranking, selection and extraction including structure preservingdimensionality reduction. Finally, the methods are illustrate withboth real and synthetic data.
