What are your thoughts looking back at 2022? “2022 was a tumultuous year. We believe there were 4 major trends last year, namely ‘resource prices trending at high levels’, ‘the rise in the importance of national economic security triggered by the crisis in Ukraine’, ‘the historic weakening of the yen’ and ‘the surge in electricity rates’. Resource prices had been continuing to see a rising trend from 2021, and the crisis in Ukraine caused the market prices of all kinds of products to surge and this even lead to temporarily halting the trading of nickel. As for how much the crisis in Ukraine affected the domestic nonferrous metals industry, we did not face any problems in terms of supply since we only procure an extremely low amount of raw materials for base metals from Ukraine and Russia. As for Europe, we believe supply in the region significantly tightened since the region had been importing a certain amount of Russian products and in addition zinc and lead smelters halted operations due to surges in electricity rates. As a result this has lead to an overall decrease in LME warehouse stock and in turn has caused resource prices to trend at high levels. Although high market prices provide a boost to the domestic nonferrous metals industry, the rise in electricity rates due to surging energy prices is a cause for concern.”
