Over a 5-year period at the University of Colorado Medical Center 6 obstetric patients with life-threatening bacteroides infections have been seen. All 6 patients had abscess formations requiring surgical drainage. The shortest hospital stay was 28 days; the longest was 80 days. There were no deaths, but it is believed that most of these patients would have died in the pre-antibiotic era. Surgical drainage still remains the best treatment, but it is felt that antibiotic treatment with chloram-phenicol or clindamycin in suspected cases may be warranted even before results of cultures are obtained. The frequency and management of thromboembolir disease in bacteroides infections are emphasized.
