With what it claims is the first major industry advance in more than a century, Otis Elevator Company has introduced the Gen2 elevator system for low and mid-rise buildings. This system is based on the use of flat, coated steel belts rather than standard lift cables, with the belts being about 30 mm wide and only 3 mm thick. But despite their apparent flimsiness, these belts are said by Otis to be stronger, more durable and far more flexible than the heavy woven steel cables that have been the industry standard since the 1800s. Also, Gen2 lifts need operational machinery that is only one quarter the size of traditional systems, eliminating the need for a separate machine room in buildings where space is at a premium.
