Technical textiles have developed rapidly over the past decade. Incomplete statistics show consumption of Chinese technical textiles in 1998 as 530,000 t, which increased to 2,081,000 t in 2002. During the 14 years from 1988 to 2002 the increase is over 11% annually. The development of technical textiles has kept pace with the sustained and rapid development of the national economy. During the 13 years 1989-2002 the annual increase of GDP was 9.3%. The rapid development of the national economy drove steadily the increase of technical textile consumption, the increase of which was even higher than of the GDP. The production of technical textiles in 2002 is shown in Table 1.
