Neonatal herpesvirus infection is a serious, often fatal infection, the incidence of which can be reduced by active management of pregnant women having the infection. Data from two institutions on 29 pregnant patients plus a review of 14 additional patients, all of whom had virologically proven infections, demonstrate that elective cesarean section prior to or less than 4 hours after ruptured membranes will significantly reduce the danger of neonatal herpesvirus infection.
