NATO is seeking to replace its existing fleet of 14 E-3A Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft with a new intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capability that will combine numerous platforms, sensors and systems into one larger network. This is expected to include new manned aircraft supplemented by un-crewed air, sea and land vehicles, space assets, ground stations, maritime assets, as well as other sensors across domains. It will also utilise artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and big data. AWACS are a critical asset for NATO, and its plan is to expand beyond purely manned air platforms to provide a wider and more detailed surveillance picture.
