1,1,1-Trimethylolpropane,polyethylene glycol, and a copolymer of ethylene oxide with the former compound were studied as additives for two citric acid durable press formulations to suppress fabric yellowing during high-temperature curing. All three additives were effective whiteners at the lower citric acid concentration, and the polyethylene glycol increased DP performance as well as the laundering life of the finish. At the higher citric acid conceentration, only the trihydric alcohol was a highly effective whitener, but its use decreased the laundering life of the finish. In the absence of additives, the 7% citric acid finish lost its pale yellow discoloration after standing 11 days in air at ordinary humidity.Several mechanisms for these effects may be operative.
