摘要

Psychosocial Occupational Therapy by Carson (2020) is an excellent quick reference text for new practitioners or those new to working in the field of mental health occupational therapy. Carson (2020) is a new text with the first edition published in 2020. It provides a foundation for practitioners to implement occupational therapy (OT) services with populations experiencing serious mental illness. It is divided into four distinct parts: introduction, theoretical approaches and assessment, mental illness and OT practice, and practice considerations. Introductory material describes the profession’s history, illuminating OT’s roots in mental health and provides a historical perspective for current practice through an exploration of practice trends and the mental health needs of society. The section also covers therapeutic communication skills using the Intentional Relationship Model, motivational interviewing, group interventions and an examination of the OT practice framework’s applications to mental health practice (AOTA, 2020; Cole, 2017; Taylor, 2020). The second portion provides guidance for using occupation-based and psychosocial theories, cognitive approaches, sensory modulation, and incorporating appropriate assessment considerations. The third portion examines several mental health diagnoses noting symptoms, prevalence, impact on functioning, treatment approaches and OT’s role with each diagnosis. The final section covers advanced practice in mental health OT addressing the psychosocial impact of injury and illness, trauma-informed care, youth mental health, and health promotion. Carson (2020) delivers valuable information for practitioners entering the field of mental health, meeting the intended goal of providing an overview of mental health OT practice.
