Research presented at the European Respiratory Society International Congress identified triggers that can cause asthma in office environments. Researchers studied the cases of 47 office workers with occupational asthma that had been reported to the Birmingham Regional Occupational Lung Disease Service. The researchers identified causes of occupational asthma in office workers in three categories: 1. Irritants inside the office: printer toner, floor tile adhesive, mold, cleaning products; 2. Irritants inside the ventilation system: mold in air conditioning and ventilation shafts that had been installed incorrectly; 3. Irritants from the office's immediate environment: nearby workshops, paint and vehicle fumes.
