We have developed a scanning spectrometer system capable of being flown in high‐altitude balloon studies of the earth’s atmosphere. Primary characteristics of the instrument are small size, large operative wavelength range (350–1100 nm), high‐data density (151 data samples across each spectral scan and each scan completed in approximately 10 s), and real‐time data telemetry to ground. We also developed and utilized a computer software package to provide a real‐time monitor of balloon gondola and instrument performance. Software reliability was enhanced by proof of correctness techniques.
