In designing more reliable products in a shorter time, there is a strong tendency to simulate multiple environmental parameters simultaneously. It is quite a task and a big investment to combine temperature, humidity, vibration, pressure, etc. with a functional test. None of the interfaces of the "intelligent" controllers of the environmental testing equipment has been standardized and requires a "system specific" investment for integration with the other equipment. The testing requirements from the end-user specify a detailed control of each parameter. Very often also safety requirements play an important role in the supervisory control of such combined tests. In order to minimize the risk and the investment level and to protect the investment for compatibility and maintainability in the future, there is a need for standardization in this field. Each year millions of EUR's in the industry are lost as each time again new projects have to be defined, experience gets lost and maintainability is not guaranteed. The presentation documents the problems in the industry, the challenge for standardization and the invitation to start a working group on the European level.
