In order to achieve an overall efficiency of 65% (today 58%) for a combination power station firing natural gas, the gas turbine inlet temperatures have to be increased up to 1350℃ (today 1230℃ ISO). To reach this target a new innovative concept for a turbine blade had to be designed, in the DFG-founded Collaborative Research Centre "Thermally highly loaded, porous and cooled Multi-Layer Systems for combined Cycle Power Plants". This concept associates multi-layered, transpiration-cooled gas turbine blades with an innovative material compound, fibre reinforced NiAl, as shown in Figure 1.
