This supplement issue of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Public Health contains the full papers from the International Conference on Global Health and the United Arab Emirates: Asia-Middle East Connections, organized by the United Arab Emirates University, held in January 2010 in Al Ain, Saudi Arabia. It is the policy of our journal to support and publish good-quality conference papers. We welcome the opportunity to bring to our readers a series of quality manuscripts authored by prominent experts from around the world.The theme for this conference reflects the fact that global health issues know no boundaries. The whole world is faced with lifestyle changes that affect health and are fueled by the globalization of trade. Yet globalization is not without its positive side and this conference illustrates the progress that can be made when experts are provided a platform to deliberate on global health issues. The United Arab Emirates is at the crossroads of global trade and population flows and faces many public health issues. Globalization results in the challenges faced in a particular region cascading to other parts of the world. In turn, strategies needed to address many public health issues can only be effective when they are implemented across national boundaries and across the boundaries that lock health workers into their own specialties discipline. This supplement includes many articles that address the global, transnational nature of many health issues and combines this approach with a multidisciplinary public health perspective. This issue will make a significant contribution to consolidating our knowledge and providing the basis for strategies to tackle global health issues.
