This paper provides a descriptive analysis of recent population changes in the Northern Territory with particular emphasis on the pattern and impact of migration. As a preliminary, methodological problems in allocating inter‐censal change to different migration flows are discussed and discrepancies in demographic accounting are highlighted Following several years of rapid population growth, the Territory has entered a phase of zero to negative growth characterised by net migration losses.
