An investigation has been conducted into the effect of hot combustion gases on the atomisation and subsequent combustion of iso-octane ejected from various types of pressure-jet atomisers. In ambient atmosphere, drop formation is caused by aerodynamic rupture of the thinning liquid sheet, whereas in the presence of hot ionized combustion gases drop formation is shown to result from perforative disintegration of the sheet. This alteration in the mode of sheet breakdown causes changes both in the mean drop size and in overall name characteristics such as combustion noise, flame shape, and carbon monoxide levels. Attention is drawn to the importance of these effects in relation to modelling of enclosures where hot gas recirculation occurs near the atomiser.
