Bamboo is versatile and has notable economic and cultural significance in South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia; being used for building materials, as a food source, and as a raw product, and depicted often in arts, such as in bamboo paintings and bamboo working. Bamboos include some of the fastest-growing plants in the world, due to a unique rhizome-dependent system. The National Bamboo Mission's report prior to ISFR 2021 reports that India is the world's second largest cultivator of bamboo after China, with 136 species and 23 genera spread over 13.96 million hectares. The annual production of bamboo in India last year was 14.6 million tonnes.
