The GCC is a political and economic union of six monarchies - Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE - formed in 1981. The six have shared a common market since 2008 and entered a customs union in 2015. Islam and Arab culture bind the member states, along with a harsh desert geography, significant natural resources-derived wealth and a degree of state subsidisation of industry. Each one has a growing and innovative cement sector.
