Changed political circumstances in Sudan and the resumed construction of a new airport outside Khartoum are leading Sudan Airways to believe it can grow the airline based on a strategy that would create a Northeast African hub. The New Khartoum International Airport project, with an original $1.15 billion construction price tag, was suspended in 2019 but has resumed. Phase 1, which includes two runways and a passenger terminal with capacity for 6 million passengers annually, is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. Unlike the current airport, located within Khartoum, the new facility is in Omdourman, about 40 km (25 mi.) south of the capital. Sudan has 16 airports, of which two have international traffic: Port Sudan International (PZU) and Khartoum. The airports are managed, along with all airspace activity, by the Sudan Civil Aviation Authority. Sudan Airways has brought in Lufthansa Consulting to draw up a strategic plan that would develop Khartoum as an African hub.
