The questioning and answering interaction provides a setting whereby adults can socialize naive children into communal views of reality. How then can an individual go beyond the tradition in which he has been socialized? Through an analysis of the scientific-knowing system, it is suggested that tradition acts both as a brake and as a springboard to the acquisition of new knowledge. Such factors as commitment, critical distance, uncertainty of outcomes are analyzed in terms of their contribution to going beyond tradition.
