摘要

When I was an occupational therapy student, one of the required texts for the psycho-social interventions class was Assessments in Occupational Therapy in Mental: An Integrated Approach (2nd ed.) edited by Barbara Hemphill-Pearson. This book was a supplement to the information provided in the other required texts and was extremely helpful when learning about the role of the evaluation process in occupational therapy mental health practice. What I appreciated about the 2nd edition was that it was organized around the different steps in the evaluation process, which includes developing the patient profile, the interview process, and assessments. In each chapter a developer of the assessment or someone familiar with it, introduced the assessment and included information such as the psychometrics, case studies that demonstrated use of the assessment, and summaries of the discussion. There were also numerous examples of assessments so that students could see how assessment is used when working with a client who has a mental health diagnosis, something extremely helpful for a student who is learning about the evaluation process. The final section of the book titled Research Concepts Used with Assessments (p. 369) discussed evidence-based assessments used in mental health, and nicely complemented evidence-based practice, something every practitioner should know. The text also had numerous appendices of helpful resources, including sample assessments and bibliographies, as well as resources regarding several well-known assessments. When I would see Barb Hemphill at an AOTA conference, I would ask her whether a new edition was coming out. Barb’s response was always, "Soon."
