Q How important is it to know how to utilize older equipment that is installed in your test aircraft for a checkride? (Example: using an old, antiquated GPS unit as part of the cross-country.) A An answer to this question can be, "Be prepared to use any equipment in the aircraft," but logic sets in here. An old GPS, or even older functional but practically non-usable equipment such as an ADF or loran, is unlikely to be asked to be demonstrated during your checkride. A simple answer of, "The equipment no longer has adequate data," or "There is not a current database to be used," can show your knowledge of the systems limitations and lack of applicability for the testing purposes of that day. One caveat here: If the aircraft is equipped with an IFR-legal GPS system capable of being updated, it must be demonstrated on an instrument practical test.
