In this letter, a random chessboard coding metasurface is designed to reduce radar cross section (RCS). We select a wideband and polarization‐independent 2‐bit unit cell to arrange the proposed metasurface. Combining the super cells designed by the convolution operations and the coding sequence using a particle swarm optimization method, thus, reflected waves can be diffused uniformly. Compared with the conventional chessboard metasurfaces, the proposed random chessboard coding metasurface can increase the numbers of scattered lobes greatly. The simulation results demonstrate that a wideband RCS reduction over 10 dB can be achieved ranging from 15.5 to 40 GHz, and the maximum reduction of RCS is up to 31 dB. The experimental results basically agree with the simulation ones.
