For wire insulation that requires low smoke generation and low smoke corrosivity, Uvtec has introduced two non-halogenated, flame-retarded polyolefin compounds. Both sold under the Safe brand name, they are designated FR1070 and FR4363. Designed for primary insulation in telecommunications applications, including fibreoptics and LAN, the new polyolefin compounds feature "excellent cut-through, abrasion and compression resistance", as well as "very good extrusion characteristics", according to the USA-based company. Safe FR 1070 is a self-extinguishing material which can be used as primary insulation in Category 3 systems - voice and low-speed data communications up to 16 MHz - including CMR riser and CMP plenum applications.
