According to NASA's Aviation Safety Reporting System, ice on airport surfaces can affect aircraft elements such as performance, ground and flight visibility, friction between aircraft tires and ground maneuverability. To help keep airport vehicle operators safe, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has produced a video that highlights best practices for safe operation of airport vehicles during winter conditions. Geared toward airport operators, air traffic controllers and pilots, the video highlights actions stakeholders can take before winter conditions arise to ensure that the airport is ready for potential hazards, such as: 1.creating a letter of agreement between the airport operator and air traffic control facility to help identify when runway access is necessary to conduct a surface condition assessment or contaminant mitigation, or to outline when known triggers will necessitate an immediate closure of the airport due to deteriorating conditions 2.developing or updating an effective snow and ice control plan 3.ensuring that equipment operators have a current airport diagram to avoid potential hazards due to decreased vision during winter conditions.
