Studies of people with complaints of memory loss indicate that this is more likely to be associated with depressed mood than a dementing illness. The characteristics of transient global amnesia are further defined and evidence is put forward indicating that its main cause is unlikely to be vascular in nature. Further indications have appeared from single-case studies of the splitting of memory processes into separable components, and work relating to the amelioration of memory impairment is discussed.
