We propose a novel dual-amplitude pulse interval modulation (DAPIM) for optical wireless communications. We present the symbol structure, spectral properties, and the expression for bandwidth requirement, slot, and packet error rates, and optical power requirements of DAPIM in the absence of and in the presence of multipath dispersion. DAPIM shows a better compromise between bandwidth and power requirements compared with on-off keying, pulse-position modulation, and pulse interval modulation. DAPIM with M=5 and M=6 is attractive in terms of optical power and bandwidth requirements on a nondispersive channel.
