paraFlorida DOT had awarded engineering consulting firm Greenhorne & O'Mara (G&O) a contract to prepare construction contract documents for the 6 mi of Interstate 95 through the City of West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County. The contract called for G&O to submit a Lighting Justification Report for FDOT. A benefit-cost analysis had to prove that new lighting would achieve twice benefit in crash reduction costs when compared to the new lighting costs. A range of lighting techniques was used to illuminate travel lanes and ramps on the Interstate, which included conventional light poles, median barrier-mounted dual-arm light poles, and ground-mounted single-arm light poles. Temporary high mast lighting was also erected for the duration of the Interstate construction activity. FDOT's standard design solution was to provide six aluminum light poles with 50 ft mounting heights each situated on a pilaster attached to the proposed bridge widening sections./para
