Can Asian countries, including China and India of course, prevent yet more European textile and clothing manufacturers from closing their doors, thus increasing the already high levels of unemployment in the 25-nation European Union? That the industry is passing through difficult times is emphasised by Gunter Verheugen, Vice-president of the European Commission, the EU's executive arm. "This is not an easy time for the textile and clothing sector," Commissioner Verheugen stated bluntly. "Every segment of textiles and clothing production has in one way or another suffered from the impact of the developments of the last few years. Many jobs have been lost," he told a Conference organised at Brussels on April 25 by the European Commission's Enterprise & Industry division, for which he is responsible.
