Type 1Herpesvirus hominis(herpes simplex virus) hepatitis is rare in adults. Following exposure to her child with herpetic gingivo- stomatitis, a young female in the 28th week of pregnancy developedHerpesvirus hominishepatitis and died. Postmortem findings were morphologically and serologically characteristic. The English literature reveals 2 well-documented cases ofHerpesirus hominishepatitis in otherwise normal adults. One of these cases was a young female, gravida 2, also in her 28th week of pregnancy. An imunologic defect may contribute to the occurrence of this entity in pregnant females. With the advent of effective chemotherapy, the diagnosis should be strongly considered in any gravid female with pharyngeal ulceration and systemic symptoms.
