Textile education in the United States started between 1872 and 1899. The first formal textile programs were the "Lowell School for Practical Design" established in Boston in 1872 and the "Rhode Island School of Design" founded in Providence. Later, programs were established throughout the country. In the 100-plus years these programs have existed, the emphasis has evolved from a trade school, hands-on education, to the more theoretical emphasis of today's research-based programs.
