In present times there is a paradigm shift in the basic idea of textile processing. Many of the conventional processes are now being seriously considered for substitution by newer non-conventional techniques for certain tangible benefits. In this context, application of other technologies in the field of textiles is fast gaining ground. One such development is the application of biotechnology in the pre-treatment processes of textiles. Biotechnology may be defined as the "application of scientific and engineering principles to the processing of materials by biological agents to provide goods and services". It is now widely believed that environmentally benign alternatives to traditional textile chemicals should be sought. Enzymes, also referred as bio-catalysts (biological catalysts), are being perceived as useful alternatives to the conventional harsh wet-processing chemicals.
