With 7.45m inhabitants, or 23.2% of the total Canadian population of 31.5m, the French-speaking province of Quebec supplies 60% of the clothing produced in Canada. Some 50% of the country's output comes from Montreal alone, the economic centre of Quebec. The garment industry is of vital importance for Quebec. Nearly 1,000 garment manufacturers employ close to 50,000 people. The sector constitutes the third largest manufacturing employer in Quebec and the most important in Montreal. Quebec's clothing production is worth nearly US$3.1b annually. Garment exports from the province reached around $1.1b in 2002, or about 57% of Canada's total garment exports.
