摘要

Most occupational therapy practitioners would probably agree that we are proud to march to the beat of our drum as a profession. With leaders as a pillar of our Vision 2025 (AOTA 2017), occupational therapy practitioners are comfortable beating the drum for other fields to follow. Although originally written almost 20 years before AOTA’s Vision 2025, Maxwell’s The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership (2007) identifies vital concepts (laws) which may be relevant to occupational therapy practitioners and students today. Leadership constructs within healthcare are, arguably, difficult to define with a high degree of fidelity (Reichenpfader et al., 2015). However, Maxwell's purpose in The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership is precisely that; to introduce twenty-one leadership constructs, reflective of traits and behaviors commonly associated with successful leaders. Each law is paired with examples from the author’s daily life to help the reader visualize opportunities for each law's application within context. Many laws contain anecdotes from recognizable figures in history or contemporary businesses to further connect the reader to each law of leadership in action and observe its associated outcome. For example, the book opens with The Law of the Lid, which associates a leader's capacity with a teams' effectiveness. Maxwell uses the story of Dick and Maurice's successful San Bernardino hamburger stand in the 1950s to illustrate this law, and it was not until a partnership in 1955 with Ray Kroc that the business transformed into the successful franchise we know today as McDonald's. Each chapter further expands upon the law and contains reflective questions that allow the reader to apply each law of leadership in their daily life. Finally, each chapter of the book ends with a self-evaluation to facilitate an action plan for implementation within the context of the reader's everyday life. Maxwell's (2007) 21 Irrefutable Laws were last updated in 2007. The update included the consolidation of several laws and the addition of new laws. The book is available in various formats, including digital, audio, hardcover, and paperback. Additionally, Maxwell's book is available in a workbook format, which may appeal to an audience using this book as part of a formal course of study. Because Maxwell's book was first published more than twenty years, it is available used at online retailers, like Amazon, for as little as $5.00 at the time of this review.
