For a little more than four decades Piedmont was one of America's postwar local service/regional airlines, before being taken over by USAir in the post-deregulation consolidation. Based in comparatively tiny Winston-Salem, North Carolina, whence it began operations, Piedmont saw the usual trend from using war-surplus Douglas DC-3s up to the Boeing 767, with which it opened trans-Atlantic service to London.
