摘要

Hawing completed a PhD in impact cratering at Imperial College London nearly two years ago, Dr Veronica Bray is now a Research Associate at the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory within the University of Arizona. There she studies impact craters on the Moon, Mars and icy satellites of Jupiter using new images from the Lunar and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiters (LRO and MRO) and archival data from the Galileo and Voyager missions. In the case of LRO, Veronica actually gets to select the targets herself, but with hundreds of thousands of craters to choose from, where do you start? A young 120-metre crater with bright ejecta rays on the floor of the much larger Murchison Crater, imaged by LROC. Image: NASA/ GSFC/Arizona State University."With the lunar work, I've been studying the impact melt morphology in fresh craters," she says. In this sense, `fresh' means craters that formed within the last 1.1 billion years - one of Veronica's targets has a youthful age of between one and ten million years. "During crater formation the expanding cavity is lined with melted rock. Dependent on its position within this cavity, sections of the melt layer are ejected from the crater, draped over the rim, or remain within the crater. The amount and location of each melt deposit yields a variety of different characteristics. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) has been revealing striking surface features in these melt deposits that we cannot see in Earth or Mars analogues because they are too eroded or covered by dust."
