摘要

This wonderful wide-field image of part of the constellation of Orion captures many favourite deep sky targets. Awinter jewel, the Horsehead Nebula is shown at top right with the equally notable Flame Nebula close by and bothseem surrounded by hot blue stars offering a beautiful contrast in colour. Likewise with the blue reflection nebulaof M78 shown at mid-left, seemingly out of place against the red hydrogen nebulosity that fills the image. Snakingdown from lower left is the enigmatic Barnard's Loop, a huge cloud of glowing hydrogen gas. Deep exposures likethis reveal that the whole constellation of Orion is bathed in intricate nebulosity and unusual framing shows oldfamiliar friends in a new light. By combining deep hydrogen-alpha exposures that capture the nebulosity so wellwith luminance, red, green and blue exposures from a dark site John Davis has produced a remarkable portrait ofa winter sky showpiece.
