Serum levels of testosterone (T), 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), androstenedione (A), dehydropiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S), 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-P), androst-5-ene-3β, 17β-diol (δ5-diol), and cortisol (F) were measured in 17 hirsute patients. As a group, the hirsute patients showed significantly elevated levels of all steroids measured in comparison to nonhirsute subjects. As individuals, the hirsute patients showed an elevated serum 17-P level as the most consistent finding; elevation was present in 16 of the 17 patients. Eighty-two percent of the hirsute women had elevated T, DHT, and F. Serum levels of DHEA, DHEA-S, A, and δ5-diol were elevated in about half of the patients.
