Research relating to sexual arousal and deviance, typologies of sexual offenders, and treatment is reviewed in the context of understanding the aetiology of sexual offending. The controversy surrounding ritualistic abuse is also briefly discussed. The need to view sexual offending as a complex interaction of social, psychological and physical influences is stressed.
