It is noble to serve in a profession that strives to prevent job-related amputations, burns, cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs), brain damage, cancer, and neurological, blood and lung disorders. The results of this work reach far beyond today's workplaces. Suffering due to the psychological and physical stresses caused by traumatic injury and disease extend to families and friends as well. What safety professionals do does make a difference. Yet, we are not as successful as we would like to be—no one is perfect. So, sometimes, terrible things happen to people. In response, safety professionals keep striving to convince decision-makers (plant managers and CEOs) of the need to eliminate or reduce risks.
