The Boeing 247 has been called the 'first modern airliner'. Designed specifically for United Air Lines, that company was the source for the PAL and PCA airplanes. The all-metal, twin-engine, low-wing design with retractable landing gear produced an aerodynamically efficient aircraft capable of a maximum speed of 182mph and a cruising speed of 161mph. The 247-D model, more powerful engines and aerodynamic refinements, raised those speeds to 200mph and 189mph, respectively. It was an aircraft well-suited for the short segments flown by PAL/PCA, and it performed well at airports with short runways.
