Figures just released from the Japanese Ministry of Transport do not paint too glowing a picture of the country's shipping activities. Having hit 100 million deadweight in 1997, by mid-1988 the Japanese fleet had lost 51 vessels to stand at 1,970 ships totalling 99 million dwt, with an average age of 11 years.
