These are underestimated yet continually significant safety problems that inflict short- and long-term suffering and drain considerable resources while hampering productivity and worker retention. Ironically, despite safety leadership creatively evolving in other arenas, companies have reflexively approached these persistent injury sources with relatively minor variations on the same old themes. Basically, singing the same song only with slightly varied lyrics, while vaguely hoping to realize resounding results. It's not just my perception or opinion that STFs plague people and companies. Look at any of the statistics. For example, according to the most recent Liberty Mutual Workplace Safety Index (2021), "falls on the same level" ranked second in the list of top 10 causes of disabling injuries, costing $10.58 billion per year. This ranking has been consistent: second in 2017 with 17.7% of costs, second in 2018 with 19.2% of costs and second in 2019 with 18.72% of costs. It is a persistent plateau of pain and performance.
