With the cost of groceries, energy and fuel rapidly rising, it was inevitable that our broadband bills would increase too. From 31 March, BT customers will pay up to 9.3 per cent more, while Virgin Media has hiked prices by an average of £56 a year and millions of Sky customers are being charged an extra £43. These big companies know that we can't live without the internet, which is almost as essential as food and heating these days, but you can save a lot of money by ditching the TV element from your broadband package. The bundles offered by internet providers may once have seemed like good value, and were then the only way to enjoy a good choice of live and on-demand TV and films. But now that Freeview offers dozens of digital channels and there are loads of excellent streaming services to choose from, there's no reason to pay your provider hundreds of pounds a year for entertainment.
