As part of the canmaking industry's efforts to help with tackling global climate change, the pressure to achieve 'carbon neutrality'by 2050 is becoming acute. Perhaps unwisely, expectations have been raised that it is 'achievable' with the simple application of investment in the necessary engineering. It's a part of the wider Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) programmes that global companies have been pursuing in recent years. These cover all kinds of emission reductions, the use of renewable electricity, resource efficiency, improving recycling and circularity, not to mention good employee care, diversity, product safety and ethical sourcing. And it's under the umbrella of acting sustainably, the definition of which covers two aspects: 'the ability [for a process] to be maintained at a certain rate or level'; and 'avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance'.
