United States suppliers exported 6.5 mt of coal in January 2022, according to ship tracking data, a good start to a year where exports for metallurgical coal are expected to be solid and thermal coal still needs to come into focus. To put it in perspective, January's 6.5 mt would have been the fourth-best month for exports in 2021. Only March (7.0 mt), October (6.8 mt) and June (6.6 mt) of 2021 saw exports exceed the January 2022 volume.
