There is no doubt that controlled environmental agriculture (CEA) can offer advantages over open field production in certain circumstances. After all, commercial greenhouse production has been practiced for more than a century. Since it was suggestedin a lecture in the 1990s, advances in artificial lighting and growing technologies, where the environment is completely enclosed and controlled, have made the concept of indoor farming possible, and it is these systems which have attracted much of the media and investment interest in the sector over recent years.
