Abstract The carotenoid composition has been analyzed in tissues of the marine clam mollusk Polititapes aureus (Gmelin, 1791), which dwells in the top part of Kazachya Bay near Sevastopol on the Black Sea. The dynamics of the total carotenoid concentration in mollusk soft tissues follows a seasonal annual cycle, with the maximum concentration (1.7 ± 0.47 mg/100 g of raw tissue) in the spring, at the beginning of March. This concentration declined to 0.41 ± 0.10 mg/100 g of raw tissue by the summer and remained almost unchanged through the rest of the year (less than 0.5 mg/100 g of raw tissue). Our investigation of the qualitative composition of carotenoids is based on bivalves collected in the spring and fall. We identified β-carotene, echinenone, lutein, zeaxanthin, alloxanthin, fucoxanthin, amarouciaxanthin A, heteroxanthin, and mactraxanthin, which account for about 80% of the total amount of carotenoids. Additionally, we qualitatively examined the carotenoid composition in other clam that co-habitate this ecotope with P. aureus and we report the possible pathways for transformation of plant carotenoids in P.?aureus tissues. We also compare the composition of carotenoids in the tissues of P. aureus and other bivalves of the genus Polititapes from different regions of the World Ocean.
