RusHydro has begun construction of the 23.4 MW Cherekskaya hydro-power plant in the North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkarian, in southwestern Russia. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on 11 November in the presence of Victor Khmarin, Chairman of the Management Board and General Director of RusHydro, and Kazbek Kokov, head of Kabardino-Balkarian Republic. The facility, which is being built on the Cherek river in the Urvanskiy region near the village of Psygansu, is scheduled to be commissioned towards the end of 2024. Formerly referred to as the Psygansu hydro-power plant, the station will be the fourth plant in the Lower Chereksky cascade, which comprises the Kash-khatau, Aushigerskaya and Zaragi-zhskaya plants with a combined capacity of 155.7 MW. The Hydroproject Institute has engineered the project to minimize adverse effects on the environment. The scheme will have a diversion system using water flow from the upstream Zaragizhskaya plant, and will be built without a dam and reservoir.
