Background: The aim of the present study was to examine the role of personality deviance in readiness to change with the mediating role of distress tolerance.Method: Data were collected from 258 Iranian substance users entering substance use treatment facilities in Ardabil, Iran. Participants completed self-reported measures on personality deviance, distress tolerance, readiness to change, and treatment motivation. In addition, they were assessed on substance use, number of previous treatments, and demographic characteristics. The data were analyzed using tests of Pearson correlation, multiple regressions, and path analysis.Results: Results indicated that personality deviance traits are negatively related to the stage of readiness to change and treatment motivation (recognition, ambivalence, and taking steps), and distress tolerance mediated the relationship between personality deviance and taking-steps.Conclusion: The findings suggest that educating distress tolerance skills may be essential for increasing readiness to change in substance users.
